Meiji Jingu was established in 1920 to enshrine Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. Though located just minutes from Harajuku and Yoyogi stations in central Tokyo, its 700,000-square-metre sacred forest envelops visitors in a silence that makes the city disappear.

鎮守の杜は創建時に全国から献木された約10万本の木々から成り、百年以上の時を経て自然の森へと成長しました。南参道の大鳥居は木造の明神鳥居としては日本最大で、樹齢1,500年以上のヒノキで作られています。都会の中にありながら深い緑に覆われたこの参道は、季節ごとに異なる表情を見せます。
The forest was created from approximately 100,000 trees donated from across Japan at the shrine's founding, and over more than a century it has grown into a natural woodland. The great torii on the south approach is the largest wooden Myojin-style torii in Japan, made from a 1,500-year-old cypress. Despite its urban setting, the tree-lined approach offers a different face with each season.
